Against The Grain Scotland was established in 2010 by two great gentleman with a love of whisky who have ventured down a whisky trail together from friends exploring distillery tours and tastings leading to their own great success in selling whisky in a bar situated in a lovely coastal Fife town. Scotland is divided into serval whisky producing regions, each with its own distinct characteristics. Each regions whiskies reflect its unique geography, climate and distillation techniques offering enthusiasts a wide array of flavour’s and styles to explore.
Highlands
The Largest whisky producing region, known for its diverse range of flavour’s, which can vary from sweet and fruit to smoky and robust. There are over 25 distilleries in the Highlands region and some of the more famous brands are Dalmore and Glenmorangie.
Speyside
Situated within the Highlands, Speyside is renowned for its smooth, elegant whiskies often characterized by fruity and floral notes. With over 60 distilleries in this region the well known Macallan brand, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are home to here.
Lowlands
Known for producing light, delicate whiskies with floral and grassy notes. The Lowlands region has only a handful of distilleries left with one being Glenkinchie.
Islay
Famous for its smoky whiskies. Islay produces robust and distinctive malts with flavour’s of seaweed and rich in peat. With under 10 distilleries in the area its home to the well known peaty Bowmore and Laphroaig.
Campbeltown
Once a thriving whisky region, Campbeltown now has under 5 distilleries left. Its whiskies are typically briny and full bodied with a hint of smoke. Most known distillers are Springbank and Glen Scotia.
Islands
This unofficial category encompasses distilleries located on various island off Scotland’s coasts, including Skye, Orkney and Jura. Island whiskies often feature a balance of maritime and peaty characteristics. Home to Highland Park and Jura whiskies.
